You want a patio that looks great and lasts. In Utah, that means designing for freeze-thaw from the start. Here's how to think about patio design that survives our winters.
Start With the Base, Not the Finish
The finish is what you see; the base is what makes it last. Before thinking about shape or size, the base needs to be right: compacted granular base, proper reinforcement, drainage slope away from the house. A beautiful finish on a bad base will crack and heave.
Size and Shape
Think about how you'll use it. Dining area: at least 10×10 feet. Fire pit seating: 12×12 or larger. Lounge area: size to your furniture plus walk-around room. Larger patios need more control joints — we plan the joint pattern for the dimensions.
Broom Finish for Traction
Broom finish gives texture — traction when wet or icy. A smooth trowel finish looks slick but is slippery. For a patio you'll walk on year-round, broom finish is the practical choice. It's clean, it's durable, and it's what we recommend for outdoor living spaces.
Drainage Slope
The patio should slope away from the house — about 1/4 inch per foot. This moves water off the slab and away from your foundation. Without slope, water pools, which leads to freeze-thaw damage and foundation issues.
Control Joints That Work With the Design
Control joints are functional, but they can work with the design. We plan joint patterns that look intentional — grid patterns, or joints aligned with the slab edges. Proper spacing prevents random cracking; good placement makes the joints look like part of the design.
What We Don't Do: Stamped and Decorative
We focus on broom-finish concrete. Stamped and decorative concrete are not current services — we'd rather do one thing exceptionally well than spread thin. If stamped is what you want, we can point you to someone who does it well.
See our patios service page for what's included, and our concrete vs pavers comparison for why concrete wins in Utah freeze-thaw.
